WPS Substance Use Prevention and Education Policy
On March 14, 2016, Governor Baker signed the "Substance Use Prevention and Education Law" (M.G.L Ch.71, Section 96). As a result of this legislation, every school district in the state is required to develop and implement a policy regarding substance use prevention and education of its students.
October 23, 2016, the Worcester School Committee approved the district policy which has been submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The Worcester Public Schools (WPS) is committed to working closely with students, families, staff and community partners to educate all stakeholders on the warning signs of substance use and abuse, in addition to providing resources for intervention and support.
The District also has an existing Code of Conduct Policy that informs all students and their families that no drugs or alcohol are permitted on school property at any time. This policy is implemented subject to the due process provision of the WPS discipline code.
The policy is in the process of being translated into multiple languages. They will be added below as they are completed.
