Excitement was in the air this morning as the newest elementary school-based library opened at Burncoat Preparatory School. The opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony as part of the "One City, One Library" initiative, a private-public partnership focused on improving literacy skills city-wide. The branch includes all new books, iPads, computers, electronic literacy stations, a Smartboard, and plenty of comfortable seating. Public hours will begin today at 4 p.m. During the school year, the branch will be open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Additional hours will be added during the summer months. A special thank you to the Worcester Public Library, the City of Worcester, and community leader Patty Eppinger for their continued support in moving this initiative forward. Happy Reading!

On Monday, March 14, Governor Baker signed a bill titled An Act relative to substance use, treatment, education and prevention which set limits on opioid prescriptions, provides information regarding opiate use for high school athletes and their parents, and requires continued education for prescribers. Yesterday, the Report of the Superintendent to the School Committee highlighted the opioid impact on students and families and our local public health response to this epidemic.
