Program Mission/Purpose

Through a balanced approach to literacy, English Language Arts education in the Worcester Public Schools empowers students to think critically and strategically, communicate effectively, and fully support arguments. Students will read, comprehend, and critique a range of complex texts and media, write and present for various audiences and purposes, as well as develop habits of reading for enjoyment.

Overarching Evidence

Students will be able to read and comprehend a range of increasingly complex text in order to communicate ideas effectively in writing by using text-based evidence.

Pre-K English Language Arts

Pre-Kindergarten concentrates on foundational reading, speaking, listening and language skills.

Grade K English Language Arts

Kindergarten students will learn the foundational skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language arts.

Grade 1 English Language Arts

Grade 1 students will learn and practice foundational skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language arts through a balanced literacy model. They will write in all genres including opinion, informational and narrative.

Grade 2 English Language Arts

Grade 2 students learn foundational reading, writing, speaking, listening and language skills through a balanced literacy model. They will write in all genres including opinion, informational and narrative.

Grade 3 English Language Arts

Grade 3 students learn foundational reading, writing, speaking, listening and language skills. They will write in all genres including opinion, informational and narrative.

Grade 4 English Language Arts

Grade 4 students will develop reading, writing, speaking, listening and language skills through grade level and varied resources with increased rigor. They will write in all genres including opinion, informational and narrative.

Grade 5 English Language Arts

Grade 5 students will master foundational reading skills as they continue to develop their writing, speaking, listening and language arts skills. They will read and analyze a variety of sources with increased rigor. They will write in all genres including opinion, informational and narrative.

Grade 6 English Language Arts

6th grade students are expected to read, comprehend and analyze literature and informational texts at grade level with increased rigor. In addition, they will write in all genres including argument, informative and narrative.

Grade 7 English Language Arts

7th grade students are expected to proficiently read and comprehend a variety of literary and informational texts that meet 7th grade standards and further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades. In addition, they will write in all genres including argument, informational and narrative.

Grade 8 English Language Arts

8th grade students are expected to proficiently read and comprehend a variety of literary and informational texts that meet 8th grade standards and further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades. In addition, they will write in all genres including argument, informational and narrative.

English I

Students will gain mastery of a range of skills and applications so that they can read, comprehend and analyze increasingly rigorous fiction and non-fiction texts, in all genre. They will draft and edit clearly written and logically organized arguments, informative/explanatory essays and narratives using evidence from texts and participate in collaborative discussions using the conventions of the English language correctly.

English II

Students will gain mastery of a range of skills and applications so that they can read, comprehend and analyze increasingly rigorous fiction and non-fiction texts in all genre. They will draft and edit clearly written and logically organized arguments, informative/explanatory essays and narratives using evidence from texts and participate in collaborative discussions using the conventions of the English language correctly.

English III

Students will gain mastery of a range of skills and applications so that they can read, comprehend and analyze increasingly rigorous literary texts representing a variety of genres, cultures, and perspectives. They will write for a range of purposes, emphasizing clear, logical writing patterns; word choice; a variety of rhetorical strategies; and use of literary conventions and stylistic devices. They will participate in collaborative discussions and use the conventions of the English language correctly.

English IV

Students will gain mastery of a range of skills and applications so that they can read, comprehend and analyze increasingly rigorous literary texts representing a variety of genres, cultures, and perspectives. Students will continue to write critical, comparative, and analytical essays They will participate in collaborative discussions and use the conventions of the English language correctly.
