## English IV

Students will gain mastery of a range of skills and applications so that they can read and comprehend grade level complex texts, write for a range of purposes, participate in collaborative discussions and use the conventions of the English language correctly.

## Pre-Calculus

For this 12th grade Pre-Calculus course, students’ learning will focus on four critical areas:

1. extend work with complex numbers;
2. expand understanding of logarithms and exponential functions;
3. use characteristics of polynomial and rational functions to sketch graphs of those functions; and
4. perform operations with vectors.

## Algebraic Reasoning

This course for 12th graders is intended to accelerate student learning in Algebra where curricular gaps may exist; upon successful completion of this course the student will be prepared for entry-level college coursework. Part one of this course covers all basic operations of real numbers, linear and literal equations, graphing lines (using tables, x-and y-intercepts), the arithmetic of polynomial expressions including properties of exponents, solving and graphing linear inequalities, perimeters and areas of basic figures, scientific notation and intrasystem metric conversions. Part two of this course covers major topics in the study of algebra. Students learn to factor polynomials (common factor, grouping, difference of squares and trinomials), perform arithmetic operations on rational expressions and complex fractions, and solve rational, quadratic and literal equations. The course also covers applications including the use of the Pythagorean Theorem, understanding the definition of radical expressions, simplifying radical expressions containing numerical and variable radicands, graphing linear equations using slope-intercept concepts, and solving systems of linear equations.

In this course, students will explore trigonometry and Algebra II topics, including right trigonometric and circular functions, inverses, and graphs; trigonometric identities and equations; solutions of right and oblique triangles; complex numbers; numerical tables; field properties and theorems; set theory; operations with rational and irrational expressions; factoring of rational expressions; in-depth study of linear equations and inequalities; quadratic equations; solving systems of linear and quadratic equations; graphing of constant, linear, and quadratic equations; and properties of higher degree equations.

In this course students will study concepts of algebra, geometry, statistics and probability in relevant, engaging contexts, emphasizing statistical and financial applications. Students will solve real-world problems and apply concepts of Algebra to decision-making through the analysis of data, modeling change, and mathematical relationships.

## Computer Science

In this course, students will solve problems by writing, running, and debugging computer programs; use commonly used algorithms and data structures; and develop and select appropriate algorithms and data structures to solve problems. Students will also code fluently in an object-oriented paradigm using Java. Furthermore, students will read and understand a large program consisting of several classes and interacting objects, showing an ability to read and understand a description of the design and development process leading to such a program.

## Financial Literacy

In this course, students will begin to develop the skills and strategies that promote personal and financial responsibility related to financial planning, savings, investment, and charitable giving in the global economy. Five broad topics will be the foundation of the course: college and career planning, money management, savings and investing, income, and spending. The course will teach students to search and assess college and career opportunities, identify and prioritize their personal money management goals, develop personal spending and savings plans, comprehend the impact of time on the value of money, understand the cost of using credit, and protect assets.

## Applied Physics: Introduction to Engineering

In this lab-based science/engineering course, students will engage in lab experiences that apply understanding of physical science principles and mathematics to the designing, building, and testing of prototypes. Students will learn about the properties of materials, forces, heat transfer, electricity and magnetism, digital/analog signals, laser and fiber optics, robotics and automation systems. These principles will be applied to understanding of: engineering design; construction technologies; power and energy technologies; communication technologies; manufacturing technologies, and biotechnology.

In this lab-based science course, students will study the fundamental concepts of life to gain understanding of the living world that surrounds and includes them. Topics will include: chemistry of life, cellular biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, biodiversity, evolution, and ecology. In this lab-based science course, students will study selected topics in Biology to develop greater understanding of biological concepts. Students will conduct lab investigations, collect and analyze data, and explore content information from a variety of text and media sources. Exploration of careers in Life Sciences and new technologies used in research, environmental protection, or health care will be associated with each unit of study. Ethical and legal implications will be addressed as students explore the application of biological knowledge in today’s society.

In an honors level course, content will be covered at an accelerated pace. Students will study topics at a deeper level and will be expected to complete more independent coursework and assignments.

In this introductory lab-based science course, students will study how biology, chemistry, and physics are used to analyze and interpret evidence. Topics will include: trace evidence, prints, serology, spread of disease, forgery, arson and crimes against wildlife and the environment. ## Human Anatomy and Physiology

In this lab-based science course, students will study the cells, tissues, organs and organ systems of the human body and may engage in the dissections of vertebrate specimens. Students will learn anatomical terminology and explore various diseases of the human body.

Young people are educated about various preventable illnesses/diseases, issues related to nutrition and fitness, as well as information on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, as well as understanding sexuality, reproduction and birth. In addition, the course explores violence and injury prevention for teens. The goal is to allow students the opportunity to explore their own health practices and realize the implications of an unhealthy lifestyle in the future. This course will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance students’ ability to make safe and healthy choices in life.

Lessons are designed to build and refine skills, engage all students regardless of talent and experience or skill level. Activities in this course may include, but are not limited to the following: Health related fitness concepts, sports, cooperative games, and dance skills.

## Band/Orchestra I

Students study standard high school repertoire and develop technique, intonation, tone production, balanced ensemble skills, music reading and musical terminology. Students are required to perform in several evening concerts. Daily practice is expected and private instruction is recommended.

In this course, students will develop instrumental technique; intonation; balanced ensemble and musical literacy skills. Student will participate in multiple out of school time performances. ## Dance I

This course is for students who have a basic foundation in dance. The curriculum consists of Beginner/Intermediate level classes in classical ballet and modern jazz. These areas will be intensively explored and applied in conjunction with introductory studies in improvisation and choreographic skills. Requirements include solo and ensemble performances, independent choreography and research projects.

The curriculum continues study in classical ballet, introduction to modern jazz and dance history. Requirements include solo and ensemble performances, Dance Ensemble performances and independent choreography and research projects.

## Dance III

This course is for students who have a serious commitment to dance study. The curriculum consists of advanced level classes in classical ballet and modern jazz, intermediate level classes in modern dance and continued study in dance history. Requirements include solo and ensemble performances, independent choreography and research projects. Daily practice is expected and private instruction is strongly encouraged.

This course is for students who have a serious commitment to dance study. The curriculum continues instruction of advanced level classes in classical ballet and modern jazz, intermediate level classes in modern dance and continued study in dance history. ## Introduction to Theater (.5 units)

Introduction to Theater introduces students to the Basics of Acting, Playwriting and Design.

Students explore many styles of Jazz music with an emphasis on improvisation. Students must commit to several performances annually. Daily practice is expected and private instruction is encouraged.

## Music Theory I

The focus of this course is the development of basic musicianship skills in sight singing, reading and writing musical notation, intervals, scales, triads, rhythm, harmony, keyboard skills, and dictation as well as an introduction to music history and appreciation. Concert attendance and critique required quarterly.

## Piano I (1 unit)

Students study standard repertoire from Mozart to Shostakovich. Each student will be assigned repertoire designed to stretch their musical skills and artistic expression. Recital performance is required.

## Songwriting (.5 units)

Students will study the art of songwriting by analyzing standard song forms, styles, and lyric structures. Material will cover Schubert, Gershwin, the Blues, Tin Pan Alley, Woody Guthrie, Pop, Rock, and Hip Hop. The course will culminate with students recording their own original compositions.

## String Orchestra (.25)

Students study the standard String Orchestra Literature at NYSSMA level 6 standards. Students are expected to be thoroughly prepared for rehearsals and commit to several evening and school performances annually.

## Theater I Magnet

The focus of this course is the to further development of acting skills through scene study, improvisation with special emphasis on character development, introduction to text analysis and beginning audition techniques. Students will also study technical theater, stage management, set, lighting and stage design, costuming and make-up and theatre history from Greece through the fall of Rome. Students are expected to participate in workshop productions and attend and review professional theatrical productions.

## Wind Chamber (.25 units)

Students are coached weekly in preparation for multiple performances annually. The focus of the course is developing chamber performance skills through the study of traditional wind chamber repertoire.

Students will begin to appreciate the difference between expression and communication as well as aspects of inquiry and problem solving. Projects will reveal works that explore experimentation, invention, and technical mastery. They will use traditional and digital media to understand the creative process of fully realizing a successful project from concept to completion.

Students will solidify the difference between expression and communication as well as aspects of inquiry and problem solving. Course will be divided into Illustration, Commercial Design, Digital Photography, and Multi Media.

## Latin I

This course emphasizes vocabulary and the grammatical elements of the language. Translation is both from Latin to English and English to Latin. Students will gain knowledge of the life, customs, geography, and the culture of the Ancient Romans. Latin vocabulary as a source of English derivatives is emphasized.

This course continues the emphasis on the vocabulary and the grammatical elements of the language begun in Latin I. Translation is from both Latin to English and English to Latin. Students will gain knowledge of the life, customs, geography, and the culture of the Ancient Romans with emphasis on the historical impact of Julius Caesar. Latin vocabulary as a source of English derivatives is emphasized.

## Mandrin Chinese I

Students will begin to develop communication skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese. They will also start identifying distinctive culture aspects of China. They will learn greetings/ responses, numbers up to 100, time of the day, weekdays, Months, year, simple statement sentences, simple interrogative sentences, family and family members, the things we use everyday, things we do for fun, the place we live including the Chinese geography, cities and famous national parks. Students will know about 250-300 Chinese characters by the end of school year.

## Mandrin Chinese II

Students will continue to develop communication skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese. They will review what they learn from Chinese 1 and then learn more on the topic of transportation, food and drink, weather and travel, shopping and summer plans. Students will learn at least 500 Chinese characters and be able to have everyday conversation in Chinese accurately and appropriately by the end of the school year.

## Spanish I

Students will begin to develop communication skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing. They will explore various cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
