Grade 7 English Language Arts
Students will gain adequate mastery of a range of skills and applications that meet 7th grade-specific standards and further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades.
Grade 7 Math
In grade 7, students' learning will focus on four critical areas:
- developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships;
- developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations;
- solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and
- drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
In this accelerated course for 7th graders, students' learning experiences include those in Math 7 as well as topics such as number theory (rational numbers), ratio and proportion, estimation, exponents and radicals, the rectangular coordinate system, sets and logic, formulas, and solving first-degree equations and inequalities. Students will experience an emphasis on readiness for Algebra-I.
Grade 7 History and Social Science
Seventh graders study the origins of human beings in Africa and the ancient and classical civilizations that flourished in the Mediterranean area. They study the religions, governments, trade, philosophies, and art of these civilizations, as well as the powerful ideas that arose in the ancient world and profoundly shaped the course of world history.
Grade 7 Science & Technology/Engineering
Grade 7 Science and Technology/Engineering explores content standards in Earth and Space Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering. This course is designed for students to be active participants in their learning as they ask and answer questions, carry out investigations, conduct experiments, and solve engineering design challenges. Students at this level are ready to formalize their understanding of what an experiment requires by controlling variables to ensure a fair test. Their work becomes more quantitative, and they learn the importance of carrying out several measurements to minimize sources of error. At the conclusion of their investigations, students can be expected to prepare reports of their questions, procedures, and conclusions.
Grade 7 Health
This health course teaches students fundamental concepts and skills that foster healthy habits and behaviors through the teaching of developmentally appropriate lessons that address drug abuse and violence prevention, including bullying, as well as human sexuality.
Grade 7 Physical Education
This course provides students the continuing opportunity to learn through a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive sequentially planned physical education program aligned with the Physical Education Content Standards in the Comprehensive Health Education Framework for Massachusetts Public Schools. In 7th grade, the content standards emphasize meeting challenges and making decisions. The focus of this course is the application of movement skills and knowledge to individual and dual physical activities; the assessment and maintenance of physical fitness to improve health and performance, and the requisite knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies; and the application of psychological and sociological concepts, including self-responsibility, positive social interaction, and group dynamics, in the learning and performance of physical activity. Units of activity include: physical fitness (activities and assessment, concepts, development and maintenance); cooperative activities (including introductory adventure/outdoor activities, such as orienteering); mature pattern throwing and catching skills (including flying disc skills) applied during small-sided games (team handball/Ultimate Frisbee/softball); track and field skills (including long jump, shot put, high jump, sprints, and relays); volleying skills applied in small-sided games (2-on-2 or 3-on-3 volleyball); racket skills applied in leadup games (paddle tennis/pickle ball/tennis); dribbling skills (hand dribble and foot dribble) applied in small-sided leadup games.
Middle School Music
In Middle School, the focus is on students creating, composing, arranging and orchestrating. Students play instruments and use compositional software to reinforce the skills and knowledge they learned in elementary school and expand their abilities to communicate effectively through music.
This course is offered for one quarter in grades 7 or 8.
Grade 7 Concert Band
Grade 7 Dance
Grade 7 Theater Magnet
Grade 7 Art
Areas of study will include the application of the properties and qualities of line, detailed use of one point perspective, review of color theory; use of geometric, freeform and realistic shapes through balance and composition, translation of two-dimensional sketches into three-dimensional form, translation of two-dimensional sketches from three-dimensional objects, use of basic proportions of the human figure in drawing and value gradation to draw visual forms, develop a sense of balance and contrast in the use and placement of texture within a composition.
