Program Mission/Purpose

The mission of mathematics education in Worcester Public Schools is to provide opportunities for all students to interpret and persevere in solving real world, complex mathematical problems using strategic thinking. Students will be effective communicators and collaborators who construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others in order to make decisions, draw conclusions and solve problems.

Algebra II: In this course, students will perform operations on rational expressions; expand understandings of functions and graphing to include trigonometric functions; synthesize and generalize functions and extend that understanding to logarithmic functions; relate data display and summary statistics to probability, and explore a variety of data collection methods. Students continue to expand and hone their abilities to model situations and solve complicated equations, including solving quadratic equations over the set of complex numbers and solving exponential equations using the properties of logarithms.

Algebraic Reasoning: In this course, students will accelerate their understanding of Algebra where curricular gaps may exist; upon successful completion of this course the student will be prepared for entry-level college coursework. This course addresses operations of real numbers, graphs of linear equations and inequalities, arithmetic on polynomial expressions, properties of exponents, perimeters and areas of 2D figures, scientific notation, and intrasystem metric conversions. Students will factor polynomials, perform arithmetic operations on rational expressions and complex fractions, solve rational, quadratic and literal equations; apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems, simplify radical expressions containing numerical and variable radicands, and solve systems of linear equations.

AP Computer Science Principles: In this course students will experience a multidisciplinary approach to the principles of computation. Students will be introduced to the creative aspects of programming, abstractions, algorithms, large data sets, the Internet, cybersecurity concerns and computing impacts. AP Computer Science Principles will give students the opportunity to use technology to address real-world problems and build relevant solutions.
