English Language Arts 2: In this course, students will demonstrate understanding of the key details in a text; determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area; compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story and compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topics; and by the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and informational texts in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with appropriate scaffolding at the high end of the range. Students will also know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words; read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension; and read grade-level text with pupose and understanding orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression. Students will write opinion, informative, and narrative texts and with guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. Students will participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about Grade 2 topics and texts and will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar when writing or speaking.
