English Language Arts 4

English Language Arts 4: In this course, students will refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Students will be able to determine the main idea or theme of a text and determine the meaning of words and phrases used in that text. Students will be able to read and comprehend informational texts and literature in the grades 4-5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. Students will know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words and read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Students will also write routinely over extended time frames for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. Students will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
