News and Media Literacy 8: In this course, students will examine topics such as analysis of media and the impact of journalism at various periods of United States history. Students study these topics by exploring and researching guiding questions such as, “Why is a free press essential to democracy?” and “What are principles of responsible journalism?” This course is designed to inspire reflection on how current events are reported and to give students ways of determining the purpose, point of view, and accuracy of the reports they see, hear, and view on social media, online, and in print. As an honors level course, the content will be covered at an accelerated pace. Students will study topics at a deeper level and will be expected to complete more independent coursework and assignments.
