English Language Arts 1

English Language Arts 1: In this course, students will ask and answer questions about key details in a text; identify the main topic and retell key details of a text; know and use various text features; and identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts. Students will increase their phonological awareness and word recognition by knowing and applying grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words; decoding one and two syllable words; and recognizing and reading grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words. Students will expand their knowledge of writing for a purpose by drafting opinion, informative, and narrative pieces. Students will, with guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and participate in shared research and writing projects. Students will participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts while following agreed-upon rules for discussion.
