This is Superintendent Binienda. I am calling tonight to share with you some WPS updates. As of last Friday, April 24, the Commissioner of Education issued new guidance to all school districts regarding student learning expectations. Both District Leadership and school- based leaders have been meeting this week to prepare for this transition. This new guidance changes the current remote learning plans. Students will be learning new information connected to state standards. Co-planning, co-teaching, and collaboration between SPED, ELL and Gen Ed teachers is required. Teachers will be providing instruction and regular feedback to student work using the feedback rubric. The feedback rubric is posted on the WPS website and will be provided by teachers to their students.
It is important all students complete the remote learning plans. There will be no grades given for quarter 4. Final grades will be determined by the average of the first three quarter grades. Students can earn one to four points on their final year grade by completing the remote learning assignments and receiving teacher feedback of one to four points.
The WPS will be distributing chrome books to families who do not have any device in their homes. The date for this distribution is Friday, May 15. Schools will be calling families to schedule the pick -up at your child’s school. More information will be provided in the next few weeks about additional distribution of chrome books to families.
District and school staff recognize how difficult this time is for our graduating seniors. With the safety of all students, families and staff being most important, the WPS will conduct virtual graduations this year. Principals will be contacting seniors and their families to work together to make these graduations memorable. More information will be shared at a later time regarding elementary and middle school promotion ceremonies.
Please continue to check the WPS Website worcesterschools.org for updates. We continue to update the Frequently Asked Questions by Family section on a weekly basis.
You will be receiving a more detailed letter next week.
Finally, the Hearts Connected Initiative for free jump ropes and chalk at food trucks is postponed due to the virus till May 18.
Wishing you all continued good health.
