Chromebooks at BMS!

Dear Burncoat Middle School families,

We are excited to announce that Burncoat Middle School has rolled out a major Chromebook deployment throughout our building. What does this mean? This means that teachers and students will be adding additional Chromebooks to their arsenal of learning tools and that students will have much better access to the devices!

Burncoat Middle School will also continue to use G Suite for Education that works hand-in-hand with the Chromebooks. G Suite for Education is a suite of tools that can help increase opportunities for critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, all while supporting the learning objectives that our teachers have for our students. These tools are free, ad-free, reliable, and secure. They are already used by millions of students in schools around the world. The best thing is that these tools are relevant to students, easy to use, and open doors to many new ways to learn.

Let’s take a look at the G Suite for Education starting with the tool purposely-built for schools - Google Classroom. Google Classroom is a collaboration tool for teachers and students that helps organize and streamline the classroom experience. With just a few clicks, teachers can create a class, add students, and create assignments or announcements. Teachers are able to see who's completed an assignment, who's still working on it, and assign grades when it’s finished. Teachers can also instantly offer feedback to students and see their questions or comments on their assignments.

Google Drive is like an online hard drive where students can store all their files - stories, designs, drawings, recordings, videos - anything! As part of G Suite for Education, Google Drive has unlimited storage so our students don’t have to worry about full disks, deleting old files, or losing anything if a computer crashes. Students can access their files from any device with internet service and, best of all, they never have to save: Drive automatically saves every time they make an edit! G Suite for Education also includes a number of Google products that promote collaboration among students and their teachers. Students can work together, in class or at home, to complete assignments and group projects. All their work is auto-saved, and they can even edit without internet service.

Google Docs documents come to life with smart editing and styling tools to help students easily format text and paragraphs. They can choose from thousands of fonts, plus add links, images, drawings, and tables – similar to Microsoft Word. Likewise, In Google Sheets students create spreadsheets for analyzing, visualizing, and charting data – similar to Microsoft Excel. Furthermore, Google Forms allows students to create quick & easy surveys to gather information. It is also a platform for students to take assessments. Additionally, Google Slides is a presentation tool that makes it easy to tell stories – similar to PowerPoint. Students can use this tool to put information together and then share their findings with their teachers and classmates. Finally, Google Drawings allows students to create graphics and flow charts with shapes, text, and images. There are additional G Suite for Education tools that can be used to save teachers and students time and increase student engagement.

We have found that our students are more highly engaged, collaborate more, develop stronger writing abilities and have greater access to their coursework through the use of Chromebooks. Furthermore, students engage in more higher-order reasoning and critical analysis during school activities, and collaborate more with their teachers. Finally, students participate in more problem-based and project-based learning activities and develop stronger 21st century skills.

We are excited to put more devices in the hands of our students and look forward to creating more educational experiences for our students!

Sincerely,

Mary Scully,
Principal
