Burncoat Middle School eighth grade Computer Technology students met with representatives from the Worcester Housing Authority to propose their plan to build a soccer field in Great Brook Valley.

Our civic engagement project allowed us to use media and technology to access interdisciplinary concepts, formulate complex questions, and pose solutions to a unique challenge in the community. We proposed that Great Brook Valley should have a soccer field to provide a safe and healthy environment for local youth. We selected a viable site for the project, calculated a budget, built a scaled model of the field, developed a marketing plan, and met with the Worcester Housing Authority to make our vision a reality.

Student Statement:

"Soccer is such a popular and wonderful sport across cultures. This field could keep teenagers away from negative things such as joining gangs, smoking, and stealing because they'll be focused on sports. GBV (like all neighborhoods) has good and bad children but it's everyone's mission to make our community a safe and peaceful place. So, let's start with the young children and the teens and see how it goes. If it goes well, we can work with parents who have a lot of stress in their lives. Let’s try to make GBV a spectacular place to be."
