Winter Sports Season Update – Dec. 4

Good afternoon,

Last night on December 3rd, the Worcester Public Schools School Committee voted 6-1 in favor of proceeding with the winter sport season starting on January 4th. This was changed from the original start date of December 14th as suggested by the MIAA. This means that the January 4th start date is the first day that any Worcester Public Schools winter high school sports teams can have tryouts or practices. These winter sports include, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls ice hockey, and boys and girls swimming. Other winter sports have been moved to a different season to ensure a safer way to play. Those sports include, wrestling and cheerleading (moved to spring) and indoor track (moved to Fall 2).

The move from December 14th to January 4th allows the athletic administration extra time to ensure that all players, coaches, parents, and staff are aware of the new Covid 19 guidelines and sport specific modifications so that everyone is up to date with the latest information and to be as safe and healthy as possible when participating in sports. The move also coincides with other leagues that are a part of our ice hockey CO-OP teams and keeps all of the Worcester Public Schools athletes and coaches starting at the same time. Finally, it gives the Worcester Public Schools administration time to analyze the next four weeks of Covid data to then decide whether to keep the January 4th start date, postpone again, or even cancel the season depending on the severity of the Covid situation at that time.

Coaches and the individual high school administrations will be letting students at their school know when tryouts are taking place (date and time) and the necessary paperwork needed in order to play a winter sport.

The actual winter sports season (games) will look very different this year. Basketball will be playing a 12 games schedule within their POD, which consists of the Worcester Public Schools and Abby Kelley. Swimming will be with the Mid Wach swim league and will be given a 5 meet schedule. Ice hockey will be playing in a POD that consists of Worcester, Grafton, Northbridge, Hopedale, and Auburn as of right now but could change depending on whether or not the Ice Hockey Committee moves other teams into our POD. We are hoping that hockey will get to play 8-12 games. Worcester is the host school in boys ice hockey which also includes Leicester and Bay Path. Auburn is the host school in girls’ ice hockey.
