At the Canterbury Street Elementary School in Main South, there are 329 curious learners in preschool through grade 6 for the 2024-25 school year.

Scholars start each day with a school wide morning meeting and a Canterbury chant that students created: “At Canterbury School you will see! All the kids know the 5 Be’s! We’re ready, here and safe each day! Respectful and responsible in every way!”

The 5 Be's are: Be Ready, Be Here, Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.

Canterbury was recognized by the superintendent in 2025 for making gains on its mid-year STAR assessment data in English Language Arts.

We are very proud of our culture and climate at Canterbury.  All teachers work very intentionally to create classroom spaces where all members feel a strong sense of community and belonging.  We work toward building relationships between teachers and students and teachers and families.  We feel this is the foundation on which a strong learning environment is built.

We have a dynamic Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team that works to promote the norms we practice throughout our school community.  Our scholars display respect for one another in all ways, which promotes a positive learning environment where all feel welcomed and safe to take risks during the learning process.

Instructional Focus

Students work daily with our instructional staff to become proficient readers and writers who can think critically and apply problem-solving and inquiry-based techniques in math, science, and the social sciences. Teachers use a set of defined, research-based, best practices to ensure that all students receive high-quality instruction, in every classroom, every day.

Student growth will be measured by teacher school-wide formative assessments, district-wide benchmarks, and statewide summative assessments. Families are integral partners in their children’s learning. Students practice these real-world skills every day, in every classroom.
