Job Corps

What is Job Corps?

Job Corps is the largest nationwide residential career training program in the country and has been operating for more than 50 years. The program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment. Job Corps has trained and educated over two million individuals since 1964.

At Job Corps, students have access to room and board while they learn skills in specific training areas for up to three years. In addition to helping students complete their education, obtain career technical skills and gain employment, Job Corps also provides transitional support services, such as help finding employment, housing, child care, and transportation. Job Corps graduates either enter the workforce or an apprenticeship, go on to higher education, or join the military.

Youth Build Program

What is Worcester Youth Build Program?

At North High, one of the very purposes of the school counseling team is to ensure each student receives the equivalent of their high school diploma, to progress on in their lives to become productive members of their community. Sometimes this approach means that students complete an alternative track to their education through programs such as Youth-Build.

YouthBuild is designed to provide low-income, out-of-school youth, aged 16-24 with an opportunity to transform their lives and become contributing partners in the community. Participants receive on-the-job, hands-on, construction skills training utilizing an actual housing rehabilitation project or new construction site in the community that helps to create quality low-income housing. Additionally, participants receive Home Building Institute (HBI) Pre-Apprenticeship Certification Training (PACT) and OSHA certification training. Participants also receive High School Equivalency Test (HiSET/GED) preparation; leadership skills development – including community service projects; counseling and support services; life, financial literacy and job readiness training, as well as assistance with job placement and transition to higher education opportunities.

In addition to the Construction/ Building Trades track outlined above, TRA-Worcester YouthBuild offers a Nurse Assistant/ Home Health Aide Training track where young people earn their state certifications through a partnership with the American Red Cross.

Massachusetts HiSET®

What is a High School Equivalency (HSE) Credential?

In the United States and its territories, adults who left high school before graduation have another way to secure a high school equivalency credential.

What does that mean? It means that, through testing, you can demonstrate you have the same skills and knowledge as a high school graduate. And doing so can help you create a whole new future.

Once you pass the test, your state or jurisdiction will issue you a high school equivalency certificate or high school equivalency diploma.

Annually, over 3000 individuals attain their High School Equivalency in Massachusetts.
