Dear Worcester Public Schools Community,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding a false threat of violence that was made against Worcester Technical High School this morning. At that time, a WTHS student called the police using a school phone and falsely reported gunshots at the school. (Please know that there was no shooting nor gun, and all students and staff are safe.)

There was a considerable and prompt police response to the building, which included Worcester Police officers searching classrooms. Several Worcester Public Schools administrators also arrived at the school to assist school administrators and staff.

Making false threats of violence is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Anyone who engages in such behavior will be prosecuted by law enforcement and face consequences from WPS.

While we are relieved to confirm that there was no real danger to our students and staff, the impact of such a threat is serious and far-reaching. False threats create fear, disrupt learning, and divert resources from the important task of education. These actions have significant consequences, both legally and emotionally, for everyone involved.

I urge you to speak with your children about the gravity of making false threats. It is essential that they understand the impact their words and actions can have on others. Encouraging responsible communication, whether in person or online, is a critical part of maintaining a safe and supportive school environment.

If there is a silver lining in today’s incident, it is that staff immediately followed our Standard Response Protocols and quickly worked to ensure the safety of everyone in the building. I would also like to thank the members of the Worcester Police Department who promptly responded to this incident.

If students or staff need support, please speak with a counselor at your school or view health and wellness resources on our website for assistance.

Thank you for your continued support in fostering a safe and welcoming environment for our students.

Sincerely,

Rachel Monárrez, PhD
Superintendent
