Doherty Memorial High School welcomes community members to take self-guided tours of its new building at 299 Highland Street on Saturday, October 19, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. During this time, a silent fundraiser of commemorative items from the old school will be held.
Numerous students, staff, and volunteers will be on hand to help with directions and answer questions for community members walking around the building.
At that time, numerous items from the old Doherty building will be for sale to benefit the school. The public may purchase commemorative bricks, signs, scoreboards, lockers, and auditorium chairs. A website will be established for the remaining items with prices following the tour. Additionally, elected officials will hold a ribbon-cutting and plaque dedication ceremony on Thursday, October 17, at 3:00 PM. The public is welcome to attend.
The new Doherty is a 425,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art school serving approximately 1,670 students in grades 9-12.
The modern space features four academic wings, a large health and physical education space that includes a gymnasium, weight room, wellness room, and adaptive spaces for students with disabilities; auditorium; black box theater; music rooms; and four spaces for expanded Chapter 74 career technical education programs: Construction Craft Laborer; Engineering Technology; Marketing, Management and Finance; and Programming and Web Development.
An athletic field is currently under construction at the site of the old building, adjacent to the new school.
Sustainability features include bicycle storage and electric vehicle charging stations, fully wheelchair accessible interior and exterior paths, and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy system that provides 50% of the school’s electricity, among other features.
