Two students working in an industrial kitchen

Overview

Culinary Arts is a Chapter 74 career technical education program at South High Community School that is designed to educate and prepare students to work in the foodservice industry.

Students will learn the necessary food preparation and customer service skills to work in today’s food service industry.

They will advance these skills through the daily operations of the Colonels’ Cafe, or through their industry related Cooperative Education (co-op) job experience during their senior year.

Students are encouraged to explore and practice current industry trends as well as incorporate the cuisine of their culture while in our culinary facility.

Given these opportunities to succeed and grow, they will develop their craft, and build needed confidence and coordination to work in today’s culinary world.

Upon graduation, after completing all four years of the Culinary program, students are prepared for entry level positions in the foodservice industry. They are able to run a station in a restaurant, understand sanitary measures, prepare basic culinary recipes, and provide good customer service.

In addition, students who are interested in pursuing a formal career in food service have the opportunity to pursue two- and four-year degrees at any college offering Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts and/or Foodservice Management.
