Welcome to South High Community School! 

We are thrilled to welcome you to your freshman year of high school, or as a new student to South High School, and anticipate an awesome year ahead!

High school is filled with new experiences, new friends, advanced curriculum and high expectations.  We look forward to a great year where we, as a community, can learn and grow together as you prepare for college and career opportunities. 

As you prepare for the beginning of the school year we have provided a list of commonly asked questions and answers. 

9th Grade Jumpstart Program

If you are entering South in the fall as a ninth-grade student, we encourage you to participate in the summer Jumpstart Program to get to know the school!

Jumpstart is an introduction to high school with fun activities and information making for a solid transition to high school.  

  • Join in icebreakers, getting to know other 9th grade students

  • Participate in fun games

  • Learn about SHCS rules, policies and procedures

  • Get to know your teachers

  • Learn how to be successful in high school

When it is awarded

First Honors

Awarded to students who receive grades of 90 or above in all major subjects and A's in conduct and effort in all subjects including enrichments.

Quarterly

Second Honors

Awarded to students who receive grades of 80 or above in all major subjects and A's and B's in conduct and effort in all subjects including enrichments.

Quarterly

National Honor Society

Students with a 3.5 or above GPA after 6 quarters of high school may apply for NHS.  Admission into the NHS is based on GPA, citizenship, leadership and character. You must apply for admission into the NHS.

In the spring, after completing six quarters

Kitty Hawk Honor Society

ROTC students with a 3.0 or above GPA after 6 quarters of high school may apply for NHS.  Admission into Kitty Hawk is based on GPA, citizenship, leadership and character.

In the spring, after completing 6 quarters

Tri M Honor Society

Music students with an A in music and a 3.0 or above GPA after 3 quarters of high school may apply for Tri M Honor Society.  Admission into Tri M is based on GPA and character through service, leadership, and cooperation.

Community Service Cord

Awarded to students who have completed 125 or more hours of supervised community service over 4 years of high school.  (Hours have been prorated for remote learning)

Upon graduation

Valedictorian

Awarded to the senior with the highest GPA. Ranking of the GPA will be computed at the end of the second marking period senior year for determining valedictorian and for processing college applications.

Salutatorian

Awarded to the senior with the second highest GPA. Ranking of the GPA will be computed at the end of the second marking period senior year for determining salutatorian.

Awarded to seniors graduating with a 3.0 or higher GPA

Awarded to seniors graduating with a 3.5 or higher GPA

Book Awards

Scholarships are awarded to 10 students at the end of junior year by the guidance department and various universities.  Awards are typically based on grade point, class rank and / or personal interest in a particular field of study.

Fourth quarter of junior year

Seal of Biliteracy

Awarded to students who meet all their graduation requirements, demonstrate proficiency in English by receiving a 240 or above on the ELA MCAS, and show proficiency in a target language by earning 4 or 5 in an AP Language Exam or other state-approved language test provided by the district. Students interested in participating in the MA Seal of Biliteracy program must complete an application available in the guidance office by the fall of their Senior year.

AP Capstone Diploma

granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on 4 additional AP Exams of their choosing.

granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research.

Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
