Engineering and Technology Academy (ETA)

Overview

The Engineering Technology program at Doherty Memorial High School is a rigorous program designed for high-achieving, technically oriented students who plan to continue their engineering education upon graduating from high school.

Doherty has partnered with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to encourage students to participate in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and build their interest in STEM degrees and careers.

Focusing on both application and practice, Doherty’s engineering program integrates its curriculum with a mix of math, science, engineering theory and lab experience. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, hardware application, implementation and production.

Students are given the opportunity to identify an EEA – Elective Engineering Elective - to research and present a rationale of the feasibility of further work on the selected EEA. Once a project is accepted, students design, build, and develop maintenance strategies for a robot or other automated system.

Further, qualifying students are granted the opportunity to participate in internships for a full semester gaining experience in areas businesses, hospitals and WPI engineering labs to name a few.

Upon graduation, students readily attend four-year colleges and universities majoring in engineering or enter the workforce operating CNC machines for cabinetmaking.

Cooperative Education and Internship Opportunities

All eligible students have the opportunity to participate in Cooperative Education and Internship experiences at a variety of approved learning sites across the city in their junior and/or senior year.  While the requirements and specific opportunities vary from school to school, and program to program, the structured combination of classroom based education and practical work experience provides students with the skills necessary to comfortably navigate the world of work.
