South High Community School's student magazine, The Apricot Journal, recently received the rank of Excellent in the annual Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literacy Magazine (REALM) program through the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

This is the second consecutive year The Apricot Journal has been honored by REALM and NCTE for its work. Last year, the student magazine was awarded the rank of Distinguished (68-74 points) and improved upon its score with a rank of Excellent (75-81 points) for this year's awards cycle.

The Apricot Journal is supervised by South High english educator Katie Eressy, and led by its Editors-in-Chief, Shannon Dennehy '25 and Madeline Trombly '27.

The REALM program publicly recognizes excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.  This year, schools in 46 states and five countries nominated 422 student magazines.

The Apricot Journal was founded in December 2020 by WPS alumni Anya Geist and Emma Robeau as a way for students to come together through creative writing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Its mission is to encourage creative writing in school and give students an outlet to express themselves.
