Jumpstart Program

Class of 2028,

Congratulations! We hope you are as excited to be here as we are to have you join us.

On August 21, 2024, at WTHS (1 Officer Manny Familia Way) during the Jumpstart Program, you will spend 4 hours (8:00 am – 12:00 pm) taking advantage of opportunities to meet your Jumpstart mentor, student volunteers, some WTHS teachers, staff, and fellow-classmates. You will also tour the facilities (wear comfortable shoes and prepare to walk up/down stairs), engage with student clubs and sports teams, and more. The day will be jam-packed with excitement and information that will surely set you up for a successful transition to WTHS.

Please make every effort to attend Jumpstart. If you have any questions, feel free to email Mr. Edward Walker or call at 508-799-1940 extension 50303.

Below is contact information for questions on the specific topics:

Bus Schedules: Email Ms. Phenix

9th Grade Explore: Email Dr. Suomala

Guidance: Email Mrs. Goodwin

Health Questions: Email the School Nurses

Jumpstart: Email Mr. Walker

In the meantime, if you want to learn more about our trades, check out the Technical Area on our schools’ website!  The list below shows all our trade areas and their abbreviations which will be helpful as we get closer to the start of school!

We look forward to spending the morning with you.

Sincerely,

School Nurse Information

Health Portal Enrollment:

If you have already enrolled your child on the health portal, please log in to indicate which over the counter medication your child may have at school. You may also use the portal to upload annual physicals and immunizations. If you have not already enrolled your child, please do so as this is a convenient and secure way to share information with the School Nurse. You’ll need to enroll once but will have access throughout the entire time your child is a WPS student. Enroll through the Worcester Schools website to complete paper copy of the Over the Counter form.

*All forms can be found on the Jumpstart 24' Google Classroom (code: nz7q3p2)

Medical Condition/Alert:

It is important to follow up with the school nurse if your child has seizures, asthma that requires an inhaler, allergy that requires an epi pen, or any other medical condition for which they would require some sort of accommodation or treatment for school so we can help facilitate care. All students using an inhaler, epi pen, or seizure medication will need:

  • Doctor’s Order faxed each school year

  • Medication Administration Consent Form  signed for each year by parent, as well as a Medication Administration Care Plan on file

  • Prescribed Medication in labeled packaging from the pharmacy with your child’s name

  • If playing sports, staying after school, or attending field trips, an Extracurricular Form signed for each school year by parent indicating any special instructions

If medication is not available, current school supply becomes expired, or order not received/expires, the following Field Trip Form must be completed in order for your child to attend trips throughout the year without the medication and exclusion

*All forms can be found on the Jumpstart 24' Google Classroom (code: nz7q3p2)

Important Nursing Information Immunization Requirements:

Worcester Public Schools requires that students have all state mandated vaccines required for the grade level. Please ensure your student does not miss any days of school at Worcester Tech. because they are not meeting these mandates.  Please provide the nursing department with an updated physical from their PCP upon starting school. This can be uploaded via the health portal, faxed by the provider to the school nurse, emailed to the shared school nurse email below, or hand-delivered to the Nurses’ Office by your student.

*All forms can be found on the Jumpstart 24' Google Classroom (code: nz7q3p2)

Edward M. Kennedy: School Based Health Center:

Our health center has a licensed Nurse Practitioner currently five days a week from Edward Kennedy Health Center. Services provided by the Nurse Practitioner include, but are not limited, to: sick visits, physicals and immunizations. For students to be eligible, parents must sign up for the Edward Kennedy Center (no insurance is required).  Applications are available at the school or on the Class of 2028 Google Classroom. This is often useful if a child comes down with a sore throat with fever as the nurse then refers the student to the Nurse Practitioner who can prescribe antibiotics or make recommendations as necessary.  That way the student can be seen the same day while in school. If you do not have a PCP and would like to appoint EMK you are able to work with the NP’s at WTHS or at Tacoma St about availability with accepting providers.

Mandated Screenings for 9th Grade:

  • Postural/Scoliosis screenings are done for all 9th graders by the gym teachers in collaboration with the school nurses. An additional letter will be sent home with your right to opt out  if you do not want your child screened.

  • State mandated SBIRT screenings will also be conducted for all 9th graders. A letter will be sent home with your right to opt out. This is a brief  and confidential questionnaire done by school nurses and student adjustment counselors asking about use of alcohol, drugs, and vaping. The data is submitted confidentially to the state and analyzed using age only. Students can be referred within school to their adjustment counselor if the student or parent gives permission for referral. An outside referral will be made if an immediate threat is determined.

*All the forms can be found on the Jumpstart 24' Google Classroom (code: nz7q3p2)

We appreciate your help in creating a healthy school environment for students transitioning into Worcester Technical High School.
