Asbestos Hazard (AHERA)

(Information updated August 28, 2023)

In compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) 40 CFR 763, in the fall of 1989, the Worcester Public Schools began inspections of each of our buildings for asbestos-containing building material (ACBM).

The initial inspection findings can be found in each building’s Asbestos Management Plan, which are on file in each school’s administrative office as well as in the Facilities Management office.

The EPA requires that re-inspections of all ACBM be performed every three years.

Accredited Asbestos Inspectors most recently performed these re-inspections in December of 2022.

An accredited Asbestos Management Planner reviewed the results of the re-inspections and recommended actions that the Worcester Public Schools should take in order to properly manage ACBM in our buildings.

Periodic surveillance of all ACBM is also conducted by an accredited Asbestos Inspector every six months.

The most recent 3-year re-inspection and six-month surveillance reports are on file in the Asbestos Management Plan in each school’s administrative office as well as in the Facilities Management office.

Everyone is welcome to view a building’s Asbestos Management Plan at any time during normal school hours (Monday through Friday).

Should you have any questions about the procedures utilized to properly manage asbestos in our buildings, please contact the Worcester Public Schools Facilities Department at 508-799-3151.
