Message from Superintendent on Israel-Hamas Conflict

October 13, 2023

Dear Worcester Public Schools Community,

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the events that have occurred in Israel and Gaza over the past several days. As a public school leader I have been searching for days to find the right words – and I have decided there are simply none that can accurately describe the level of suffering, terror, pain, and loss that people are enduring.

We recognize that some of our families are directly touched by the conflict. Some may have family or friends who live in Israel or Gaza who have been impacted. If your child is upset and would like to talk to someone at school, please know that our school adjustment counselors and trusted adults are here to support them.

Additionally, our district website has a page titled, “Speaking to Children About War,” with resources from UNICEF, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and the American School Counselor Association. WPS staff seeking counseling support may also utilize the Employee Assistance Program.

Anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic rhetoric, language, behaviors, and actions are not – and will not – be tolerated. Any hateful language, imagery, or actions – against any group or individual – should be reported immediately to school or district administration and appropriate action will be taken as per district policies.

In the Worcester Public Schools, through education and through teaching, we seek to promote a world of peace where all students may walk through our classroom doors and feel respect, love, and belonging. We are always focused on the well being of our students, staff, and families. Our district community is here to support one another and lift each other up during difficult times.

Sincerely,

Rachel H. Monárrez, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Worcester Public Schools
