Resources on Speaking with Children About Lewiston, Maine Shootings

October 26, 2023

Dear Worcester Public Schools Community,

Words cannot express the devastation, heartache, and horror we all feel as we process the news of the deadly mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine.

As we collectively process our grief, we should be cognizant that this traumatic incident may understandably trigger fear among our students and staff. If your child is upset and would like to talk to someone at school, please know that our school adjustment counselors and trusted adults are here to support them.

We encourage parents/caregivers and staff to review the following resources to assist them when speaking with children about this incident:

Please know that the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors in the Worcester Public Schools is our top priority. We recently shared an update about the district’s safety planning, which includes implementing the “I Love You Guys” Standard Response Protocol. In mid-November, we will share recommendations about additional safety measures that will be taken in the coming months as a result of a third-party audit of district safety with the Worcester School Committee.

As a mother and a human being, I cannot fathom the pain and anguish that so many people are enduring right now in Lewiston. Today, please take a moment to practice kindness, hug your loved ones, and take care of one another.

Sincerely,

Rachel H. Monárrez, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Worcester Public Schools
