Multilingual Seniors: Apply for Seal of Biliteracy

The Worcester Public Schools will continue to offer the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy to the graduating class of 2024.  The award recognizes graduates who speak, listen, read, and write proficiently in English and another language. If you are senior this year and are multilingual, please apply online.

In order to earn the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy, students must be graduating in June 2024, demonstrate proficiency in English and a partner language, and earn proficiency on the English Language Arts portion of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) Exam. An assessment in the partner language is required to document the student’s proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Successful completion of the Seal of Biliteracy proficiency is recognized with a seal affixed to the students diploma and transcript. In addition, WPS recognizes students with a medal that may be worn at graduation.

The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy also provides colleges and universities with a method to recognize and give credit to applicants for attainment of high level skills in languages. Currently several public and private institutions of higher learning in Massachusetts provide credits for prior learning and/or advanced course placement for students who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy. Those public institutions include:

  • Bridgewater State University
  • Bunker Hill Community College
  • Cape Cod Community College
  • Massachusetts Bay Community College
  • Middlesex Community College
  • Mount Wachusett Community College
  • North Shore Community College
  • Northern Essex Community College
  • Quinsigamond Community College
  • Salem State University
  • Worcester State University

We encourage seniors who are interested in earning this award to complete the QR code below.  If you have questions about the MA State Seal of Biliteracy program, please email Michelle Huaman, World Language Liaison or Jessica Mandes, Director of the Office of Multilingual Learners.
